Is Tantra just about sex?

No. Classical Tantra aims at liberation and most of its practice is meditation and breathwork. The association with sex comes from neo-Tantra, a twentieth-century Western movement.

The classical texts date from the sixth century CE onwards and they describe a path of attention rather than a set of techniques for the bedroom. Compassion Retreats teaches from that tradition. A retreat that leads with sexual technique is selling neo-Tantra under an older name, and it is worth knowing that before you pay.

What do the days hold?

Breath work and slow movement, and contact that stays inside boundaries you set first. At Compassion Retreats all touch is non-sexual and any part of it can be declined without explanation.

You work with what the body is doing right now. The jaw. The shoulders. The breath that stops halfway. Nothing is performed and nobody is asked past what they have agreed. The house takes one party at a time, so the room holds your party and nobody else.

How do I choose a Tantra retreat?

Ask what the programme teaches and where its boundaries sit, in writing, before you pay. A retreat that leads with sexual technique is selling something else.

Ask who holds the work and what they trained in. Ask what happens when you say no to any part of the practice. Compassion Retreats answers those questions in writing before a deposit moves, and the answers matter more than the photographs.

How does this work for a couple?

A couple arrives as two people with two histories, and the days are built for both. The Couples Intimacy & Tantra retreat runs four or five days for two people in one villa at US$4,499 or US$5,999.

Some couples come for the intimacy work alone and some sit with psilocybin on the same day in the same room. Sharing a room does not mean sharing an experience. What passes between you in the hours afterwards is where the work shows itself.
