Sitting together means two people taking psilocybin on the same day in the same room, with doses set for each person and a facilitator with you both. Sharing a room does not mean sharing an experience. Compassion Retreats holds couples on the same session day in one room, and the couples retreat runs four days at US$4,499 in one villa. What passes between you in the hours afterwards is part of the work.
This piece sits in our writing on Tantra and intimacy.
What does it mean to sit with the medicine on the same day?
It means one room and one facilitator, with two doses worked out separately. Compassion Retreats sets doses per person and holds both partners in the room from the first hour until you are both settled at night.
The day is one shared frame around two private hours. You will see each other and you will be seen. What you each do with those hours is not a joint decision.
Do two people share an experience when they share a room?
No. Two bodies and two histories do not match, and the medicine does not read a relationship. One of you goes quiet and the other cries. One laughs for an hour while the other lies still with closed eyes.
This surprises couples more than anything else on the day. The expectation is a shared descent and the reality is two separate hours in the same warm air. It is easier to hold when you know it in advance.
What do the hours after the session look like between two people?
One of you comes back to ordinary speech before the other does. The hours after are slow and physical, and they are full of small logistics rather than conversation. Eating, water, a blanket, the walk to the room.
Some couples talk through the evening and some sit in silence until morning. Both are workable. What helps is letting the slower person set the pace, and this is the first of the days when the work between you becomes visible.
What if only one of you wants to sit?
Then only one of you sits. The medicine is optional at Compassion Retreats and some couples decide against it and come anyway. The days are complete without it.
The partner who is not sitting can be in the house and can be near the room, and can be the first face seen afterwards. That role asks for steadiness and it is real work rather than a lesser form of it. Preparation covers it the same way it covers the session.
Why does preparation together matter?
Because the session happens inside a relationship and not beside it. The preparation call before travel is where you say out loud what you each hope for and what you each fear, and the words land differently with a facilitator present.
The two of you will have at least one difference in what you want from the day. Finding it before you arrive is cheaper than finding it in the room. Compassion Retreats takes a confidential intake per person precisely so that two histories are read as two histories.
What does integration for a couple involve?
It involves talking about the session as two accounts rather than as one story. Compassion Retreats includes two integration calls by video inside the first month, and for a couple those calls cover what surfaced between you and not only what each of you saw.
Difficult material comes up between partners in this work. An old grievance can arrive in the middle of an otherwise quiet evening, and it arrives with a force that surprises everyone. That is workable. It is what the integration calls are for.
One boundary is fixed at Compassion Retreats whatever else shifts. All touch is non-sexual, inside boundaries you set first, and any part of it can be declined without explanation. This holds in couples work the same way it holds in solo work.
