How to choose a Tantra retreat

How to choose a Tantra retreat

Ask what the programme teaches, who holds it and where its boundaries sit, in writing, before you pay. Classical Tantra is not about sex and a retreat that leads with sexual technique is selling something else.

Before you pay anyone, ask what the programme teaches and who holds it. Ask how touch is bounded and what happens if you want to stop. Classical Tantra is not about sex, so a programme that leads with sexual technique is selling neo-Tantra instead. Compassion Retreats holds one party at a time outside Tulum on retreats of 4 or 5 days, and all touch is non-sexual, inside boundaries you set first.

This is part of our writing on Tantra and intimacy.

What should a Tantra retreat teach?

A serious Tantra retreat teaches classical practice and says so in plain words, and the aim in the tradition is liberation rather than pleasure. The means are specific. Meditation, breathwork, mantra and slow movement carry most of the work.

Ask to see how a day runs before you book. A programme with roots names its practices and its hours without decoration. Sexual technique is not part of classical Tantra and it is not part of the work at Compassion Retreats. The material itself is set out in What is Tantra, really? and the question of sex is answered in Is Tantra just about sex?.

Where sexuality appears in the classical record it appears as one energy among several, worked toward the tradition's own aim. A retreat that leads with it is selling something else under a borrowed name.

Who should hold the work?

Ask for names first and then ask what those names trained in. For a tradition that comes from somewhere, ask who taught the teacher and where the teaching comes from. Lineage is the classical answer to that question.

Look for training you can check and for boundaries stated before you arrive. Ask what happens when someone in the room becomes frightened or wants to stop, and listen for a procedure rather than for reassurance. Compassion Retreats puts one facilitator in the room from the first hour of a session until the guest is settled at night, and Lena Kurganska leads the Tantra work with almost two decades of Yoga and Tantra practice behind her.

Charisma is not a qualification. A long list of workshops is not a lineage.

What should you ask before you pay?

Get the answers in writing before any money moves. A provider who runs a careful operation can answer all of this in a day.

  • What is taught and where does it come from?
  • Who is in the room and for which hours?
  • How many people will be in the house at the same time as you?
  • What are the rules around touch and how is any of it declined?
  • What happens if someone wants to stop?
  • What does the price cover and what is extra?

Compassion Retreats answers all of this on a call before confirming a booking, then takes a confidential intake per person before travel.

What are the warning signs?

Pressure is the clearest one. Countdowns and discounts that expire today belong to sales rather than to care. So do requests for full payment up front.

Then the answers themselves. Unnamed facilitators and a screening process that is a single form are reasons to book elsewhere. So is a refusal to put things in writing.

An emphasis on sexual technique is a warning sign in this field. So is nudity treated as a requirement. Any pressure toward sexual contact and any blurring of the line between teacher and student ends the conversation, and there is no version of it that is acceptable.

Promises of instant results belong in the same category. Classical Tantra asks for discipline and long practice and it does not sell shortcuts. Compassion Retreats states the boundary before you book and holds to it: all touch is non-sexual, inside boundaries you set first, and any of it can be declined without explanation. Nothing sexual happens in a session.
