A plant medicine retreat is a stay built around psychoactive plants or fungi, with preparation before a session and integration after it. Psilocybin mushrooms are the substance with the longest history here. Compassion Retreats treats the session as optional and screens every guest before confirming a booking. You can tell a well-run retreat from a poor one by the questions it asks you.
What actually happens at a plant medicine retreat?
A plant medicine retreat builds around one long day. Preparation comes before it and integration comes after it. The preparation is a conversation and a set of clear instructions. The session day is long and held by someone whose only job is the room. The integration is where the meaning of it gets sorted.
At Compassion Retreats the session commonly runs six to eight hours. One facilitator is present from the first hour until the guest is settled at night. When a couple comes, both sit in one room on the same day and doses are set per person.
Which substances are we talking about?
Psilocybin mushrooms are the substance with the longest history of use in Mexico, in Oaxaca and the Sierra Mazateca. Ayahuasca is a brew from the Amazon used in some Mexican centres. Peyote is a cactus with legal protections tied to Indigenous ceremonial use and to conservation. 5-MeO-DMT appears in the tourist trade too.
These are not variations of one thing. They differ in strength and in what they ask of the body. Research the specific substance and not the word ceremony.
How do you tell a good one from a poor one?
A well-run retreat answers specific questions in specific words before you pay anything. A poor one sells you a feeling and asks for a deposit. The difference shows up in the screening and in what happens after you go home.
| Well run | Poorly run | |
|---|---|---|
| Screening | A call before booking, then a confidential intake per person | No screening, or one generic form |
| Group size | Small and stated in advance | Unstated, or large mixed groups |
| Who holds the session | Named people with stated training and experience | Unnamed guides with no training described |
| During the session | Someone present from the first hour until the guest is settled | One facilitator covering several rooms |
| Afterwards | Integration time booked before you leave | No contact once the session ends |
| Results | Nothing promised in advance | Results promised in advance |
| Price | Written down before you pay, extras named | Vague totals and extras appearing later |
Ask directly about training and about how the person in the room handles a difficult hour. Ask what happens if someone wants to stop. Vague answers are your answer.
Is any of this legal in Mexico?
The legal position is unclear and understanding it is your responsibility. Psilocybin and peyote are controlled substances under Mexico's General Health Law. A separate exception in the Federal Penal Code covers Indigenous ceremonial use, and that exception does not extend to tourists. Ayahuasca and 5-MeO-DMT contain compounds that are scheduled outright.
Enforcement varies between states and between officers. There have been arrests, most often around ayahuasca carried across borders. No provider can promise you that the law will not apply to you.
Read the current law before you book and decide for yourself. Chacruna and ICEERS both track how this area moves, and several of the sources below follow it closely.
What does Compassion Retreats do about all of this?
The session here is optional. Compassion Retreats quotes it on the call, you pay for it separately and it never sits inside a platform booking. Some couples sit together, some decide against it and come anyway, and the days are complete without it.
Screening comes first. A call before anything is confirmed, then a confidential intake per person covering medical and psychological background, then a preparation call before travel. Contraindications are stated plainly: acute psychiatric crisis and a personal or family history of psychosis rule the session out. The screening call is where that gets worked out.
Two integration calls follow by video inside the first month. Compassion Retreats does not treat conditions and does not give medical advice. It holds a session carefully and stays in contact afterwards.
